Bernd and Hilla Becher: Landescape/Typology : For nearly 50 years the
German husband-and-wife team of Bernd and Hilla Becher photographed
large industrial structures such as gas tanks, water towers, coal mine towers,
blast furnaces and more. A new exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art titled
“Bernd and Hilla Becher: Landscape/Typology”, on view through August 25th,
explores the gritty black-and-white work of this distinctive pair.
Encompassing their signature typologies (grids of closely related images) and
the lesser known landscapes of industrial sites, the exhibition covers their
travels throughout northern Europe and the U.S. The Bechers met in 1957,
began working together in 1959 and married in 1961. Early on they developed
a style for which they became widely known: each photograph depicts a large
structure and presents it in the style of an engineer’s diagram. These grid-like
typologies highlight the uniqueness and the commonality of each structure
while the companion landscapes depict the industrial plant and its
surroundings.
